Small faith communities are gatherings of spiritual pilgrims from different backgrounds who reflect this profound shift in perception toward Eucharist. As they gather for the sacred meal, they celebrate a vision of faith, share joys and tears, acknowledge a cosmic citizenship as people of God, and model the equal ministry of women and men. They believe, as Paul did, that in the body of Christ there is no Jew, Greek, slave, citizen, male or female. (Gal.320). All are welcome at the eucharistic celebrations, not only families, but single parents and children, the divorced and remarried, gays and lesbians, married priests and all those who find themselves on the fringes of the institutional church for whatever reason. From our own experience of such community we offer these prayers which we hope will be helpful in the eucharistic sharing of other small faith communities worshipping in the Catholic tradition.
The worship offered in these prayers of the gathered community reflects the tradition of the Church in that the Body of Christ gives the Body of Christ to the Body of Christ. As we remember, bless and share the sacred meal, Christ becomes uniquely present among us, personally nourishing us in Eucharist. As we experience the presence of the Cosmic Christ in this sacrament, we become more aware that our lives are holy; our lives are blessed and broken in the mystery of God's transforming love. Christ continues to die and rise in our ordinary human experience. God's presence is always with us. Our eucharistic celebrations remind us that we are a community of believers called to be full of love as we bring peace and justice to the world.
We have a deep need to express, in action and words, the immense joy of this
identity we share in Christ. We know that we participate in prayer rooted in the ancient tradition of Catholicism which, in turn, is rooted in a much more ancient tradition than itself. Joyfully we explore and are nurtured by those older ways as we continue to celebrate the rites familiar to us from our youth. We are part of the continuing dance of Creation with the Creator of the Universe, and we acknowledge the unfolding of this ever-new cosmic dynamism among us.
This book contains two communities' celebrations of the sacred which we offer now to others for their spiritual reflection and shared, eucharistic-centered gatherings. May it serve as a resource for all inclusive communities who worship in spirit and truth. The prayers and rituals can easily be adapted to the specific needs of any group. It is our hope that other pilgrims will experience the blazing fire of Spirit's outpouring as they enter into the celebration of new life. We truly believe that in God and in the Christ we live and move and have our being. As we take our place upon the cosmic altar of Creation, we fulfill Christ's high-priestly prayer that all may be one. The moment has arrived and the celebration has begun!
